Harvard Lab for Developmental Studies

The lab is embedded in larger communities both within Harvard and in the wider Boston area, which offer rich resources for students interested in developmental psychology, psycholinguistics, and linguistics. Research assistants are encouraged to make use of these resources. Folks who have held this position in the past have gone to graduate programs in psychology, linguistics, speech and hearing sciences, school psychology, and clinical linguistics.

Job Description: 

Professor Jesse Snedeker is seeking an energetic and intellectually-engaged research assistant for studies of language comprehension in typically-developing children, children with autism, and adults at the Harvard Lab for Developmental Studies.

This is a one-year, full-time, limited-term position with the possibility of renewal. Review of applications will begin in April for a flexible start date between May 15th and June 15th 2023.

Responsibilities include:

Training and supervising undergraduate assistants, managing a summer internship program, preparing study stimuli, testing children and adult participants for a variety of studies, cleaning/coding data, assisting with data analysis, contacting families, maintaining equipment, coordinating the use of space, organizing meetings, and assisting with grant management and IRB protocols.

 Necessary qualifications:

1. An undergraduate degree in psychology, linguistics, or cognitive science

2. Availability for flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends, to facilitate data collection

3. A strong interest in the psychology of language, language acquisition, and conceptual development

4. Prior experience working with young children

5. Comfortable with technical troubleshooting

6. Well-organized, attentive to detail, calm under pressure, and comfortable juggling half a dozen things at once

Skills that would be put to good use include:

1. Experience with eye tracking

2. Experience with EEG

3. Experience with R, Matlab, and Eprime

4. Experience working with children with autism

5. Coursework in semantics, pragmatics and syntax

6. A sense of humor
