About the position
LSE’s Department of Mathematics is looking to appoint a Research Officer to contribute to the EPSRC New Investigator Award “New perspectives towards Woodall’s conjecture and the Generalised Berge-Fulkerson conjecture”, working with Principal Investigator Dr Ahmad Abdi. The project will take an optimisation-inspired approach towards the conjectures and related problems. The anticipated start date is 2 October 2023, but earlier or later start dates may be possible. The successful applicant will hold (or be near completion of) a PhD in a discipline relevant to mathematical optimisation, such as Mathematics, Computer Science, or Operations Research by post start date. They will demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and experience in the theoretical understanding of fundamental problems in combinatorial optimisation, and its connections to other areas such as graph theory, integer programming, and submodular optimisation. They will show evidence of developing a body of good quality publications, in well-recognised peer reviewed outlets, through independent original research.
Salary
from £40,229 to £48,456 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £52,095 pa inclusive of London allowance

Job description
The applicant will be appointed as a tenure track assistant professor and contribute to research and teaching within the areas of operations research and operations management. Teaching concerns courses in the Econometrics and Operations Research programs, as well as in business and economics programs at SBE, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research falls within the Graduate School of Business and Economics. The QE department has a strong research record in mathematics of operations research, econometrics and economic theory. It is largely responsible for the bachelor and master programs in Econometrics and Operations Research, including Data Science, Mathematical Economics and Actuarial Science, with yearly enrolment of around 90 bachelor and 35 master students.
REQUIREMENTS
Has a PhD (or close to completion) in Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another relevant area;
Has a strong research orientation;
Has experience with education in Operations Research & Operations Management;
Is an enthusiastic and cooperative colleague, willing to collaborate with the Operations Research group, the QE department, and the school as a whole in research and teaching;
As the language of instruction is English, your command of English (oral and writing) should be excellent.

YOUR PROFILE
Completed University studies with above-average success, in particular in the field of computer science with a focus on theoretical computer science, in the field of mathematics with a focus on optimization or discrete mathematics, in the field of operations research or similar.
Above-average, completed doctorate related to the teaching or research areas of the Institute for Algorithms and Complexity
Experience in publishing research results in publications at relevant computer science/mathematics conferences and their presentation, or publications in relevant journals
Interest in complex optimization problems motivated by data science and skill in solving them algorithmic techniques, especially approximation algorithms, parameterized algorithms and integer programming
Very good communication skills in German and English for project meetings, reports, publications and presentations
